Lot 89 | Treasure Island, with an original watercolor
Estimate value
$ 6 000 – 8 000
Anniversary edition of Treasure Island, featuring an original signed watercolor by Andrew Wyeth on the half-title and N.C. Wyeth's celebrated illustrations. Of illustrating Stevenson's work, N.C. Wyeth would write: "I pulled through the entire set of canvases (almost as tall as I am) without one break in my enthusiasm and spirit. The result is I've turned out a set of pictures, without doubt far better in every quality than anything I ever did." Andrew Wyeth, his son, has fittingly painted buccaneers alongside a canon on a preliminary leaf.
Octavo. Original black cloth stamped in gilt, pictorial dust-jacket. [Together with:] Five autograph notes signed ("The Wyeths," "Betsy Wyeth," and "Betsy & Andy Wyeth") and one autograph invitation, to Jack Henry, c.1980s-90s. Thanking Mr Henry or wishing him a happy holiday; the invitation is to the world premier film of Treasure Island at the Delaware Museum of Natural History. Provenance: Jack Henry, a longtime friend of the Wyeths'.
