Circle of Veit Stoß (1447 Horb am Neckar - 1533 Nuremberg)
Late Gothic crescent moon Madonna with Child, Franconian, c. 1500, walnut, carved, deeply hollowed on the back, without mount, height 100 cm, crown partially damaged, visible wormholes, partial stress cracks in the wood, small bumps
The well-preserved sculpture shows the depiction of the Mother of God in an upright position on the crescent moon. This refers to the revelation of the evangelist John. She holds the infant Jesus in her arms, who is looking at the viewer with his head tilted to the right. The naked child Jesus holds an apple in both hands, which functions as a symbol for the Fall and refers to the later redemption of mankind through the death of Jesus on the cross. Mary wears a cloak draped over her shoulders over a tight-fitting garment, which is girded up under her breast with a fine ribbon. Her narrow face, with its accentuated high forehead, slender bridge of the nose and fine, rounded brows, displays delicate and gentle features and is entirely in keeping with the style of the time. Under the crown on her head, her long hair falls in gentle waves down her back. Originally, the sculpture was probably either the centre of an altar shrine or part of a Marian chandelier in the church hall. The masterfully carved sculpture was most likely created in the environment of the renowned Nuremberg sculptor Veit Stoß (1447-1533). This attribution can be justified stylistically. Especially the masterly depiction of the folds is reminiscent of the characteristic style of Nuremberg sculpture around 1500, which was strongly influenced by Veit Stoß. In addition, the design of the slightly wavy hair, the slanting eye cut and thus also the delicate physiognomic design of Mary indicate that they were created in this environment.
