Lot 93 | UNSIGNIERTES DEUTSCHES TAFELKLAVIER UM 1780-1800
Estimate value
€ 1 800 – 3 600
Unsigned German Squarepiano Circa 1780-1800
This squarepiano is an unsigned instrument from the period between 1780-1800. It rests on a separate stand. The four hand-stops operate the mutations allow for very colourful playing: divided damping (FF-h0 and c1-f3) and divided harp-stop (FF-h0 and c1-f3).
The squarepiano has a German “Prellmechanik” without escapement and without checks. The single tone dampers underneath the strings (under-dampers with wooden damper levers) are each mounted in their own wooden capsule.
The keyboard (FF-f3) has a 3-octave-span of 47.6cm. The hammers are covered with leather.
Dimensions of the instrument:
Length: 1535mm
Width: 547mm
Total height: 810mm
Body height: 196mm
The construction of the action is very reminiscent of that of Melchior Guante from Münster, Germany. It is possible that the instrument originates from the circle of this instrument maker.
A similar square piano was auctioned in Stuttgart in 2018 and is now in a private collection in southern Germany.
