Lot 565 | Vergoldetes Fabeltier einer Schiffsfahne, wikingisch, 10. Jahrhundert
Estimate value
€ 10 000

A Viking ship's flag finial in the form of a gilded mythical creature ('The Great Beast'), 10th century
Mythical creature with tail bent back in an s-shape and head stretched forward. Ornamental decoration on the body. Between the barrels still parts of the upper frame of the metal flag. Full bronze casting with traces of gilding. Length 6.9 cm. Height 6.5 cm. Weight 201 g.
This is an exceptionally rare example. Only four large Viking ship flags (in Sweden and Norway) have survived in their entirety. The metal cast mythical creature was placed on the upper edge of the flag and pointed forward, similar to the dragon heads on many ships of this time.
Provenance: From an old South German private collection.
