Diese Jade wird in dem Buch von FILIPPO SALVIATI: “THE MYSTERIOUS STONE: Chinese Jades from the Neolithic to the Han in private collections” publiziert (Erscheinungstermin Frühjahr 2017)
Notes by Prof. Salviati: Small bird-shaped carvings similar to the present one are attested in late Shang period tombs: a few examples, one of which matches the present Lot, have come to light from the tomb of Lady Fu Hao (c.1250 BC), excavated in 1976 at Yinxu, Anyang, Henan province. The matching example is reproduced in Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Yinxu yuqi (Jades from Yinxu), Wenwu Chubanshe, Beijing 1981, pl.63, right, and described as a ‘swallow’. The motifs incised in double lines on the wings of the present Lot are similar to those engraved on the bird and other animal-shaped jades from Fu Hao’s tomb. However, the excavated bird is not pierced with a hole for suspension as the pendant presented here.
