Der Frühling. Öl/Holz, auf der Schubkarre von späterer Hand monogrammiert.
Bayerische Privatsammlung. Sebastian Vrancx war der älteste Sohn des Frans Francken I (1544-1616) und der Bruder des Frans Francken d.J., dem bekanntesten und begabtesten Mitglied der Malerfamilie Francken. 1573 in Antwerpen geboren und 1647 ebenda gestorben, zählt man Sebastian zu den Begründern des flämischen Militärgenres, einem Genre, das sich bald auch in den südlichen Niederlanden, Holland, Italien Und Deutschland verbreitete.
Die hier vorgestellte Tafel des Frühlings aus einer Jahreszeitenfolge ist möglicherweise eine Werkstattwiederholung aus der vielfach replizierten, kompositorisch und in den Maßen identischen Vierer-Gruppe von Eichenholztafeln, oder muß im unmittelbaren Umkreis der Vrancxschen Werkstatt gesucht werden.
So konnte Sotheby’s diese „Four Seasons“ (51 x 65 cm) 2021 für eine Millon Euro verkaufen, Christie’s (NY) hatte, vermutlich, dieselbe Gruppe schon 1994 angeboten und für eine halbe Million Euro zuschlagen können. Darüberhinaus tauchen seit über 30 Jahren immer wieder Einzeltafeln aus dieser Jahreszeitengruppe auf, eine Vielzahl von so hoher malerischer Qualität, daß man sie Sebastian Vrancx direkt zuschreiben konnte, bzw. signierte Tafeln direkte Eigenhändigkeit auswiesen.
Die vier Tafeln wiederholen hierbei ein Kompositionsschema: bei „zweigeteilter“ Tafel breitet sich am Boden, auf gut ausgeleuchteter Bühne, ein üppiges Stilleben aus (mit den Utensilien bzw. Früchten der jeweiligen Jahreszeit), während den oberen Teil Frühling-Sommer-Herbst-und Winter- Landschaften mit ausführlichen Figurenstaffagen beleben.
