Further details

A PAIR OF PATINATED LEAD FIGURES REPRESENTING JUPITER AND AMPHITRITE OR VENUS, SIGNED BY WALTER POMPE (1703-1777)

The figures of Jupiter and Venus or Amphitrite illustrate Walter Pompe's mastery and inventiveness. Established and renowned for his religious works, the sculptor, assisted by his vast Antwerp workshop, did not neglect private commissions, which provided him with the opportunity to create secular subjects. Trained by Michiel van der Voort the Elder (1667-1737) and then "meester in het belthoudenn" (master sculptor) of the Guild of Saint Luke in 1730, he skilfully translated the modernity characteristic of this generation of Flemish Baroque sculptors with mythological subjects, sometimes inspired by other works, as in the case of Campaspe, kept at the Victoria and Albert Museum (inv. no. A.32-1975), largely inspired by Giamblogna's Venus known as Cesarini.
