Further details
GIUSEPPE MARIA CRESPI (1665-1747), JUPITER AMONG THE CORYBANTES, OIL ON CANVAS
Giuseppe Maria Crespi (1665-1747) was one of the most innovative Bolognese painters of his time. His fame now is largely due to his intimate genre scenes, which offer an innovative vision of everyday life in Emilia-Romagna, however, this same creative approach can be found in his history paintings, as witnessed in Jupiter among the Corybantes. This episode comes from the story of the King of the Olympians. To protect Jupiter from his father, Saturn, who, following a prophecy, had decided to swallow all his sons, his mother, Rhea, entrusted the child to the nymph Adrastea and the Corbyantes, who hid the child on the island of Crete. His protectors fed him with the milk of the goat Amalthea, who Crespi places in the foreground of his composition. The nymph on the left, putting her finger to her lips, urges the others to remain silent so as not to attract Saturn's attention. Crespi painted at least two other versions of this subject, one in the Kimbell Art Museum, Fort Worth, Texas (inv. no. AP 1984.17), and the other in the Staatsgalerie, Stuttgart (inv. no. 3294), both dated to circa 1728-1735.
