Lot 163 | WILDE, Oscar (1854-1900)
Estimate value
1000GBP £ 1 000 – 1 500
The Soul of Man under Socialism. London: privately printed, 1904.
One of 250 numbered copies: bound in remarkable white batiked velvet with a bold abstract design, most probably the work of Agatha Wegerif, the Art Nouveau designer and teacher (1867-1944). Wegerif was a leading Dutch batik artist, painter and director of the batik workshops for Arts and Crafts school of the Nederlandsche Kantwerkschool. She made canvases, wall hangings, rugs and other textiles with plant and animal motifs in a distinctive Art Nouveau style. Wilde's article was first published in the Fortnightly Review for February, 1891, edited by Frank Harris, and published by Chapman and Hall. In this famously provocative political article Oscar Wilde reconsidered his aestheticism, taking account of social and political ideas, and attacking the assumptions of Victorian society. Not in Mason.
Octavo (176 x 135mm). Number 139 of 250 numbered copies, numbered in ink on verso of half title, ‘Agatha Wegeriff+81’ in pencil to fly. Contemporary white batiked velvet boards, with a bold abstract pattern in blue on upper side, grey silk endpapers (grey silk slightly torn on front endpaper, upper hinge cracked, velvet worn on spine, board edges, and corners); modern pigskin folding case, blind stamped on both sides with the same design as the binding. Provenance: Barry Humphries (1934-2023; bookplate).
