Provenance:
Private ownership, Germany.
After his first years of study in Karlsruhe the young painter Wilhelm Trübner moved to the art metropolis Munich. There he became acquainted with Leibl's works and quickly became one of the painters in his circle, which also included Johann Sperl and Carl Schuch. After the circle broke up in the mid-1870s, Trübner turned away from landscape and portrait painting and towards classical subjects such as history painting. Thus, around 1877, he produced various large-scale depictions of the Battle of the Giants, versions of which are in the Museum der bildenden Künste in Leipzig and the Staatliche Kunsthalle in Karlsruhe.
