First edition, the rare deluxe issue with hand-coloured lithographs on card - the finest depictions of the great abbeys dissolved by Henry VIII, featured against the beautiful and lively landscapes of Yorkshire. The lithographs were produced by Day & Son, who also undertook the production of the illustrations for David Roberts’s majestic Holy Land, and the artist, William Richardson was the leading Yorkshire topographical painter of his time. 2 volumes, large folio (615 x 460mm), hand-coloured map, lithographic dedication leaf with arms in colours and gold, 84 lithographs, comprising 57 full-page (of which 35 fully hand-coloured and mostly mounted on card) and 26 half-page fully coloured views to text (some mounted), with an elaborate initial printed in two or more colours (some spotting mainly confined to text leaves). Contemporary dark morocco gilt, sides with multiple borders in gilt and blind, gilt centrepieces, spines gilt, all edges gilt (extremities slightly rubbed).
