WISDEN

Cricketers’ Almanack for 1919, edited by Sydney H. Pardon. London: John Wisden & Co, [1919].

Fine copy of the 56th edition, the last of the World War One Wisdens. Although the 376 deaths recorded here brought the wartime total to nearly 2,000, the pleasures of cricket are emphasized in a new era of peace. The announcement of the death of George Tubow II, king of Tonga, at 46 draws the comment: ‘Very fond of cricket, gaining his love of the game while at school in Auckland. His subjects became so devoted to the game that it was necessary to prohibit it on six days of the week in order to avert famine, the plantations being entirely neglected for the cricket field.’ The plate of ‘Five Public School Cricketers of the Year’ includes A.P.F. Chapman of Uppingham school whose career in first class cricket only ended in 1939.

Octavo (162 x 100mm). Half-tone plate (two distinct paper stocks seem to have been used with pp.161 to end slightly darker in tone and more prone to browning at margins than the first half of the book which is very clean). Publisher's gilt-lettered brown hardback cloth, yellow printed endpapers (extremities only very faintly rubbed).
