A rare and beautiful painted cityscape of Wuchang Prefecture, with the Yangzte River shown prominently across the composition. By the end of the Qing dynasty, Wuchang Prefecture was the capital of the combined provinces of Hubei and Hunan and an important site of provincial government.
Manuscript map of Wuchang Prefecture, ink and color on native paper, 670 x 1330 mm, horizontal painting mounted as a hanging scroll on ivory silk to 2185 x 860 mm, backed, dark green silk borders and silk protective wrapper with cloud and bird patterns, thin square bamboo rollers with contemporary protective cloth. Cartouches for names of places and buildings, written in Chinese. (Toning and a few stains, creasemarks, some repaired tears along the middle register and margins of the map.)
