Ferdinand Gustaaf Willem Oldewelt
Ferdinand Gustaaf Willem Oldewelt was a Dutch painter and art teacher. Ferdinand Oldewelt was educated at the Rijksakademie van beeldende Kunsten Amsterdam from 1871 to 1878, where he studied under the direction of August Allebé and Barend Wijnveld. He then continued his studies at the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten van Antwerpen as a student of Charles Verlat. In 1891 he became headmaster at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Haarlem, after which he was appointed director of the Academie Minerva in Groningen in 1896. In 1903 he was appointed headmaster at the Academie van Beeldende Kunsten en Technische Wetenschappen in Rotterdam, where he worked until his retirement in 1922. Among others he was a teacher of Pieter den Beste, Gesina Boevé, Alida van Houten, Hermann Mees, Henri Minderop and Johannes Hendrik Eduard Schilling. In 1890 he was one of the first painters to paint in the later artists' village of Laren, but he did not settle there until 1922. He became a member of the Laren School. Oldewelt was a member of "Arti et Amicitiae" and "Pulchri Studio".
