Frank-Arno Grüttner

Frank-Arno Grüttner was a German freelance painter. He first devoted himself to surrealist painting in Berlin, but in the early 1980s he changed his painting style to oil paintings of "city people" and also worked on religious motifs. When he had had enough of Surrealism at the end of the 1970s, he turned to new directions. At first, he oriented himself on impressions that his neighbourhood in Frankfurt offered him and painted everything that caught his eye in terms of extremes - decadent city people, junkies, motorcyclists before and after the accident, changing his painting style completely. The result was pictures that did not idealise people, but rather exposed their innermost selves. For his Frankfurt paintings he used garish colours, but in the last 15 years the colour red came more and more into play, playing an enormously important role in Grüttner's painting.
