Josef Reinhard

Josef Reinhard, real name Josef Alois Alfons Reinert, was a Swiss painter and engraver.

As a young man, Reinhard studied in Italy, returning to Lucerne to make a living from religious works, including several large altarpieces. Gradually he also gained a reputation as a portrait painter. Between 1796 and 1802, Reinhard traveled throughout Switzerland to document national costumes for his large cycle of engravings of Swiss peasants.
