Figuration Libre

Figuration Libre, translating to "Free Figuration" or "Free Style," emerged as a French art movement in the 1980s. This movement was France's counterpart to Bad Painting and Neo-expressionism in America and Europe, Junge Wilde in Germany, and Transvanguardia in Italy. The group was established in 1981 by Robert Combas, Remi Blanchard, François Boisrond, and Hervé Di Rosa, with the term 'Figuration Libre' coined by Fluxus artist Ben Vautier.

Characteristic of this movement was the incorporation of elements from comic book art and graffiti into their works. Artists of Figuration Libre were known for their use of bright colors and exaggerated, caricature-like figures. This approach brought a colorful, cartoony spirit to the urban movement, reflecting a freedom from conventional artistic norms and an embrace of more spontaneous, expressive forms of art.

Figuration Libre gained international recognition between 1982 and 1985, when these artists exhibited their work alongside American counterparts like Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Kenny Scharf in cities like New York, London, Pittsburgh, and Paris. This cross-cultural exchange highlighted the global impact and appeal of the movement.

The movement was significant in its blend of various artistic elements and its break from the minimalist and conceptual art that had previously dominated. By integrating street art and bold figurative expression, Figuration Libre artists created a distinct style that continues to influence contemporary art.

For collectors, auctioneers, and experts in art and antiques, the works of Figuration Libre offer a unique glimpse into an exciting era of artistic innovation and cross-cultural exchange. Their vibrant and expressive works are a testament to the creative freedom and stylistic experimentation that defined the movement.
