Old Kingdom

The Old Kingdom, spanning from the Third to the Sixth Dynasty (2686–2181 BC), represents a defining period in the history of Ancient Egypt. This era, also known as the 'Age of the Pyramids,' is characterized by the remarkable architectural achievements and the establishment of a centralized administration in Memphis.

During the Old Kingdom, the concept of the Egyptian king (later known as Pharaoh) evolved significantly. The king was seen as a living god, an incarnation of Horus, bridging the human and spiritual worlds. This belief was vividly reflected in the monumental pyramids constructed as royal burial places, most famously at Giza.

The era began under the rule of King Djoser of the Third Dynasty, who initiated the era of pyramid building with the Step Pyramid at Saqqara, designed by his vizier, Imhotep. This period marked a transition from previous burial practices to the construction of grandiose pyramids, setting a precedent for centuries to come.

The zenith of the Old Kingdom's power and architectural prowess was during the Fourth Dynasty, particularly under the reign of Sneferu and his successors, Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure. King Sneferu, known for his extensive building projects, constructed several pyramids, including the Bent Pyramid and the Red Pyramid at Dahshur, refining the techniques used in pyramid construction.

Khufu, Sneferu’s successor, built the Great Pyramid of Giza, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. This pyramid, the tallest man-made structure for millennia, exemplified the engineering skills and organizational capabilities of Ancient Egypt. Khafre and Menkaure continued this legacy with their own pyramid constructions, contributing to the Giza Plateau's iconic skyline.

However, the Old Kingdom's grandeur did not last forever. The end of the Sixth Dynasty marked the beginning of the decline, with diminishing royal power and increased influence of local governors. This shift led to the decentralization of the government and the eventual collapse of the Old Kingdom, ushering in the First Intermediate Period.
