Alessandro Magnasco was an Italian painter, one of the most prominent representatives of Genoese Mannerism. In his time he was better known under the nickname Lissandrino (il Lissandrino).
Magnasco painted pictures of nature: grandiose ancient ruins, romantic waterfalls, gorges, forest huts - landscapes populated by small figures of vagabonds in rags, soldiers, travelling monks and beggars with characteristic elongated proportions, walking woodcutters, porters, laundresses. Magnasco's style was close to the searches of Venetian painters of the 18th century.


Antonius Höckelmann is a German painter and sculptor educated at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin.
Sculpture and painting are intertwined in Höckelmann's work. Wooden, plastic, bronze and even straw figures were painted by the artist, giving them a new sound.

Burkhard Held is German painter living and working in Berlin, Germany. His art is based on figuration dissolving into abstraction. In 1993 he became professor at the Berlin University of the Arts and later served as a professor at the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, PRC. Burkhard Held is a figurative painter, who dissolves his motifs – landscapes, portraits, flowers – into color fields with a strong tendency towards autonomy. His strongly colored all-over images reinterpret things as abstract and then lead the back into figuration. In 2009 Held started to dedicate himself to the subject of flowers: blossoms become compositions with a landscape character, and are distributed in equally strong colors across the canvas.


Frans Masereel was a Flemish painter and graphic artist who worked mainly in France, known especially for his woodcuts focused on political and social issues, such as war and capitalism. He completed over 40 wordless novels in his career, and among these, his greatest is generally said to be Passionate Journey.
Masereel's woodcuts influenced Lynd Ward and later graphic artists such as Clifford Harper, Eric Drooker, and Otto Nückel.

He was wounded in the war, and after returning to Munich, he continued his studies at the Kunstakademie. In the 1920s Josef Scharl joined the artist groups New Munich Secession and Juryfreien, successfully participated in their exhibitions, and later became acquainted with the Impressionists.
Writing in the New Objectivity style, Josef Scharl was forced to emigrate to the United States in 1939, and 1944-46 marked the peak of his fame in the United States. He was also commissioned by the publisher Pantheon Books to illustrate the Grimm brothers' fairy tales and other books.

Karl Hofer was a German expressionist painter. He was director of the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts.
One of the most prominent painters of expressionism, he never was a member of one of the expressionist painting groups, like "Die Brücke", but was influenced by their painters. His work was among those considered degenerate art by the Nazis, but after World War II he regained recognition as one of the leading German painters.
