Aleksandr Mikhailovich Gerasimov (Russian: Алекса́ндр Миха́йлович Гера́симов) was a Russian and Soviet painter of the 19th and 20th centuries. He is known as a portrait painter, a master of domestic and narrative historical genres, and a book illustrator. Gerasimov also created colorful landscapes and vivid still lifes.
Aleksandr Gerasimov became famous as the author of works in the style of socialist realism. His works reflected political ideas of the Soviet power, but at the same time they were bright and humane. Gerasimov was considered a favorite artist of Joseph Stalin, whose portraits he also painted.
Aleksandr Gerasimov was awarded the title of People's Artist of the USSR and received many awards, including four Stalin Prizes. He was a doctor of art history and the first president of the Academy of Arts of the USSR.
