BARTHOLOMÄUS ZEITBLOM, THE ANNUNCIATION, OIL ON PANEL LAID DOWN ON PANEL, FRAGMENT FROM THE MARIÄ HIMMELFAHRT CHURCH ALTAR IN BINGEN, GERMANY

Bartholomäus Zeitblom (1455/1460-1518/1522), a German Renaissance painter, was one of the most famous masters of the Ulm school of the late 15th century. His painting, initially linked to the late Gothic period, opened up to Flemish and Italian humanist influences during his lifetime.

This elegant fragment depicting the Annunciation comes from the reverse of the altarpiece in the Church of the Assumption in Bingen, southwest Germany. Now known in German as the "Bingener Altar", this famous work comprises five sculptures by Niklaus Weckmann (active around 1481-1526) and two wings painted by Zeitblom, each made up of a separate recto and a verso panel. The parts of the altarpiece date from around 1503-1505, but the whole thing was dismantled when the Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen family bought the manor of the town in 1787 and decided to modernise the church. Zeitblom's paintings were broken up in 1845; the left panel, from which the present painting comes, was lost, and the right panel was retained. At the end of the 19th century, the parts remaining in the church were reconstructed to create a new version of the original altarpiece. Today, the front and back of the 16th century right panel form the two wings of the restored altarpiece. Fortunately, our painting did not remain lost for long; in 1894, the expert Max Bach (1841-1914) spotted it at the Ulm collector Friedrich Geiger's (1840-1930) home and realised thanks to the specific brocade that it was a fragment of the altarpiece.
