CONDER, Charles (1868-1909)
Three autograph letters signed ('Charles Conder', 'Conder'), to Mrs [Dalhousie] Young and to [his wife, Stella Maris], Chantemerle (France) and n.p., 29 September 1898 and n.d.
Together six pages, various sizes, the letter to Mrs Young in ink on squared paper, the two to Stella in pencil, both illustrated with sketches, the first a self-portrait encumbered with artistic equipment and escaping the rain, the second of a fan; with four printed catalogues for exhibitions of Conder's work at the Dutch Gallery, the Leicester Galleries, Carfax & Co, the National Gallery and the Beaux Arts Gallery, 1903-1930; and related matter. In half purple morocco folding box. Provenance: Barry Humphries (1934-2023; bookplate).

Charles Conder on his friend Oscar Wilde: 'he turned Chantemerle into a charming little state [and] made himself king'. Writing from Chantemerle in September 1898, Conder reports that he is 'working hard but at fans I must have some done. My pictures stand over for the present'. He has been much interrupted by visits, including from Oscar Wilde (in the year after his release from prison): 'Oscar stayed here some time. I think some people were rather annoyed at my bringing him – but he turned Chantemerle into a charming little state made himself king and possessed himself of Blunt's boat for his barge – & got little boys to row him from Chantemerle to La Roche every day then he took his apperitifs [sic] & returned laden with duck & ham & wine usually which served as extras to the frugal dinners we get here. / He is much more serious than when we saw him in Dieppe & very depressed at times poor fellow. / He says with so much sorrow [that] he can never go into society again & feels I think that he is rather old for the volatile poets of the "Quartier"...'. Condor's two affectionate letters to his wife, Stella Maris are written from painting expeditions: 'The canvases came all right but the paints have not yet arrived ... It is nice taking back 3 pictures & if they are not quite finished there is not really very much to do'; 'I am glad to hear that my pictures are well hung it is a great satisfaction to know that they have given the "Belle[s] Ecouteuses" a place of honour ... I have finished the Sea fan & done another of the Empire ... with Dante sleeping in the corner to give it point'.

Oscar Wilde was released from prison on 19 May 1897 and sailed for Dieppe the same evening.
