[CROWLEY, Aleister (1875-1947)]
Jezebel and other Tragic Poems. By the Count Vladimir Shareff. Edited, with an introduction and Epilogue by Aleister Crowley. London: Privately printed by the Chiswick Press, 1898.
Exceptionally rare first edition of Crowley's second book: one of ten copies printed on Japanese vellum, from a total edition of 52 copies. It is certainly one of Crowley's scarcest titles. The book, privately printed by Crowley, comprises a small suite of love poems, on the twin themes of homosexual love and spiritual yearning, partially inspired by his break from his lover Jerome Pollitt (Herbert Charles Pollitt 1871-1942), the art collector, correspondent of Wilde, patron of Beardsley and Whistler, and an on-stage female impersonator who performed as Diane de Rougy.

Quarto (287 x 225mm). Title page in red and black, printed in black letter, printer’s woodcut device on title and verso of last. Original Japanese vellum turned-in wrappers over thin card boards, title blocked in gold on upper side within decorative border, partially uncut, untrimmed (light dust soiling to wrappers, a little darkened). Provenance: Barry Humphries (1934-2023; bookplate).
