Retrouvé par la Monuments, Fine Arts and Archives Section et transféré au Munich Central Collecting Point, (MCCP n° 378/4) le 23 novembre 1945 ;
Retourné en France le 25 juin 1946 et restitué à Marguerite Stern, le 19 avril 1946 ;
Puis par descendance à leur fils, Maurice Stern (1888-1962) et leur belle-fille Alice Stern née Goldschmidt (1906-2008) ;
Puis par descendance.

FRANÇOIS BOUCHER, MONUMENT IN HONOUR OF DOROTHEA SANDOW, PORTRAITED IN PROFILE IN A MEDALLION, SURMOUNTED BY A COLUMN AND AN URN, BLACK AND WHITE CHALK ON BLUE PAPER
This monument, drawn on blue paper, would have been created by François Boucher in honor of a certain Miss Dorothea Sandow in Berlin (according to P. Jean-Richard, op. cit.). The young woman is depicted here in profile in a medallion, supported by two nymphs, in the middle of a fluted column topped by a funeral urn. In the lower part, a seated cherub holds an open book, garlanded with roses. The print by Jean-Henri Eberts corresponding to the drawing is dedicated to Frédéric Ulrik, Baron de Friesendorff, secretary to the King of Sweden (fig. 1; J.-H. Eberts, after F. Boucher, Monument de Mademoiselle Sandow à Berlin, Paris, musée du Louvre, inv.18565).
Like this drawing, François Boucher produced several drawings for objects (andirons, candelabra, clock cases, vase mounts) and monuments in which the human figure plays an important role (A. Laing, Les dessins de François Boucher, exhib. cat., New York, American Federation of Arts, p. 211). Gabriel Huquier also published two collections of fountains designed by Boucher and engraved by Aveline in 1736 and 1738. A design for a Fountain with tritons, on blue paper, using the same technique and similar in size to this drawing, dated later, from the 1760s, can be stylistically compared to the present drawing (private collection; Ibid., no. 79).
This drawing reflects the many talents of this academically trained history painter, who also worked in the field of applied arts, creating designs for tapestries, sculptures, objects and monuments.
