LIONELLO BALESTRIERI (CETONE 1872-1958)Beethoven (Sonate à Kreutzer)fusain sur papier brun clair50,8 x 108,5 cm (20 x 42 3⁄4 in.) Post lot text This drawing is related to Beethoven, the masterpiece by the Tuscan artist who obtained the first prize at the 1900 exhibition in Paris (Trieste, Civico Museo Revoltella). There are less than ten identified painted versions (oil on canvas, painted sketches and individual studies of characters principally on canvas) and a number of preparatory drawings referenced by A. Marabottini in the retrospective catalogue on the artist in 2000 (Lionello Balestrieri (Cetona 172-1958), exh. cat., Cetone, Florence, 2000, nos 1-8). The present drawing seems to be a riccordo of this composition. On the left, the artist and his companion, accompanied by a few friends, focus on the performance by the violinist Giuseppe Vannicola and an anonymous pianist playing Ludwig van Beethoven’s sonata for violin and piano, op. 47, known as the ‘Kreutzer Sonata’.
