On the publication history of Mendelssohn's first book of Songs Without Words in 1832. Having 'made due researches in my Journals and Diaries with regard to the first publication of Mendelssohn's 1st book of Melodies Op 19 (or Songs without words) in London', Moscheles goes on to answer a series of numbered questions from Novello, recording inter alia that the work was sent to him in Mendelssohn's autograph manuscript (which he still owns) via Maurice Schlesinger in Paris; he transcribes the original title page and notes 'I was requested by Mendelssohn to have this work printed in London as his property and on his own account, which was done accordingly. On the 21 July 1832 I paid the engraving (Mr Sheen) and printing of 200 Copies to Mr Hull, signed these Copies, and sent 150 Copies to Mr V. Novello in commission for Sale'. He goes on to remember Mendelssohn's arrival in London in April 1832: 'The next day he played to me the 1st book Melodies from memory'. Moscheles continues with his recollection of registering the work at Stationers' Hall, and concludes 'I am not aware that any one is better initiated in the transaction than myself, except perhaps Mr C. Klingemann', though he adds a few details from a letter by Mendelssohn of 16 May 1833 about his dealings with Victor Novello.
Alfred Novello (1810-1896) was the eldest son of Victor Novello, the founder of the music publishing firm which bears their name and which the son built into a major commercial force. Moscheles was based in London from his marriage in 1825 until 1846, when he moved to Leipzig to head the Conservatory founded by his friend and sometime pupil Mendelssohn.
