ROOSEVELT, Theodore (1858-1919). Typed letter signed ("Theodore Roosevelt") as President, to Mrs. Rebecca P. Flandrau, [Washington D.C.], 9 November 1901.

One page, 175 x 210mm., with several autograph corrections on White House letterhead (one mailing fold). Matted and framed.

Regarding the early political appointment of the son of a family friend, Roosevelt assures his correspondent that "no appointment was ever made more strictly on the merits," and cites an old Russian proverb: "Once in ten years a man can help a friend," and concludes "it is not much more often that the chance to help coincides with the need or desire of the man to be helped. I am so very glad that this particular occasion they came together". The Flandrau/Selmes family owned a ranch in the Dakota Territory which was close to Roosevelt's own ranch, leading to a close friendship between Roosevelt and members of the family. The appointee referenced here is an early political appointment of John Wallace Riddle (1864-1941), who would go on to serve as Roosevelt's Minister to Serbia and Ambassador to Russia.

[With:] ROOSEVELT, Theodore. Autograph letter signed ("Theodore Roosevelt") to [Oscar King] Davis, [New York], 16 November 1891. Two pages, 112 x 90mm. (tape remnants on the verso, just affecting final character of signature). Making lunch arrangements, Roosevelt requests his correspondent to "...remember me to Caspar Whitney and tell him we get some first-class elk and sheep heads this fall in the Shoshones..." * ROOSEVELT, Theodore. Typed letter signed ("T. Roosevelt") with autograph correction to Rev. John Wesley Hill, New York, 30 June 1910. One page, 155 x 196mm., on The Outlook, Office of Theodore Roosevelt letterhead (some finger-soiling at left, one small ink stain). Politely declining an appointment. * MCKINLEY, William (1843-1901). Typed letter signed ("W. McKinley") with autograph postscript as Governor of Ohio to J. M. Taylor, Columbus, 5 August 1895. One page, 200 x 270mm on Office of the Governor letterhead (some off-shadowing of postscript at top). A note to a friend regarding travel arrangements.
