Richard Strauss (1864-1949)
Autograph working manuscript for the solo for Flamand, 'Diese Liebe plötzlich geboren', from the opera Capriccio, [1941/42]
In short score, 41 bars in three systems of four staves, two pages, 270 x 230mm, on 14-stave paper, some staves extended into the margin by Strauss, paginated '47' and '48', some alterations in lead pencil, the first page lightly cancelled in blue pencil. Provenance: Sotheby's, 22 November 1989, lot 229 (unsold).

A leaf from the working manuscript of Strauss's last opera. Subtitled 'A Conversation Piece for Music', the opera explores the competition for pre-eminence between poetry and music, dramatised through the story of the Countess who is torn between two suitors, a poet and a composer. The present draft (corresponding with figures 94 to 98 in the published score) is the setting of the composer Flamand's declaration of love (ironically inspired by seeing the Countess reading in the library), after which he asks the Countess which of the two arts she prefers: Strauss's initial draft here varies significantly from the final version, which is markedly more understated in the orchestral parts. Capriccio's libretto was by Strauss and Clemens Krauss, from an idea suggested by Stefan Zweig: in its original form, it comprises a single act of 2½ hours, though an interval is now often inserted immediately after this scene.

[Sold with:] Autograph letter signed by Strauss to Lefèvre Fontalis, Garmisch, 17 July 1920, thanking him for an invitation; envelope;
[And:] Helmut Jürgens (1902-1963). 13 caricatures of the composer Hans Pfitzner, pencil and gouache, various sizes, signed by the artist, 1931-1932. The caricatures frequently take inspiration from Pfitzner's opera Das Herz, which premiered in 1931.
