Washington offers advice to an inexperienced militia officer concerning intelligence reports during the Siege of Boston. A very good letter, written early in the war as Washington attempted to streamline often disjointed command structures and add some measure of professionalism to what then was largely a force composed of militia. Here, Washington responds to a report from Captain Richard Dodge, who was stationed at Chelsea, who had been reporting on British movements on Noodle Island, sending daily reports. In this case, Washington responds to a report that is no longer extant, but from the tone of it, Dodge had sent a report that nothing of note had occurred that day, together with a request that was not to be directed to the Commander-in-Chief. To this Washington admonished the captain. Firstly,
"Your directions in respect to Provisions, must come from the Commissary Genl. Mr. Trumbull, & to him you are to apply as it falls within his department." He then advises Dodge that "There will be no occasion of making a report every day unless something new occurs," in which case, "do not fail to communicate your observations." He then asks why Dodge had failed to "report the number of vessels which have put to Sea within these 24 hours – you ought not to neglect such things as these or any other matters of consequence." Not published in the Papers of George Washington.
