The first porcelain manufactory in Europe, Meissen, was founded in 1710, shortly after the discovery of the secret of making hard porcelain in Saxony by the alchemist Johann Friedrich Böttger (1682-1719) in collaboration with the scientist Ehrenfried Walter von Tschirnhaus (1651-1708)
