Grigor Narekatsi (or Krikor, Grigor Naregatsi) was an Armenian monk, poet, mystical philosopher and theologian, born into a family of writers. The book of mournful songs is a collection of lyrical and mystical poems by Grigor Narekatsi. It was completed in 1002 and consists of more than 10 thousand lines. The earliest surviving copy dates from 1173. Excerpts were printed in 1513 in Venice, the book was first fully published in 1673 in Marseille.
