Arabesque (it. arabesco, FR. arabesque - "the Arab") is the European name of the Eastern complex of medieval ornament, consisting mostly of geometric, calligraphic and plant elements, and based on exact mathematical calculation. Arabesque is based on repetition and multiplication of one or more pattern pieces.

Arabesque was widespread in Europe during the Renaissance. Later European art has repeatedly addressed this fanciful and intricate, very complex and exquisitely refined ornament.
