ANTWERP SCHOOL 16th CENTURY, CIRCLE OF ADRIAEN VAN OVERBEKE, CHRIST CARRYING THE CROSS, OIL ON PANEL
This lively composition depicts a dramatic episode from The Passion of Christ as recounted in the Synoptic Gospels. Like all the condemned, Jesus was forced to carry his own cross to Golgotha, the place of crucifixion. However, on the way the Roman soldiers forced a passer-by, Simon of Cyrene, to carry the cross for a while. The reason behind this charitable act is not explained anywhere in the texts. In this painting, the artist follows the iconographic tradition of showing Simon helping Christ, rather than Simon carrying the cross by himself. In the lower right-hand corner, Saint Veronica is also shown giving Jesus her veil so that he can wipe his brow. Although a common subject in European painting, this episode does not appear in the New Testament. It was only in the 15th Century, under the influence of mystery plays, that the legend of Veronica became popular.
The caricatural exaggeration of the figures, with their hollow eyes and half-open mouths, suggests that the artist of the present painting was associated with the work of the master Adriaen van Overbeke (active around 1508-1529). Van Overbeke ran a large workshop in Antwerp in the early 16th Century, which mainly produced sculpted and painted altarpieces. Numerous contracts testify to his collaboration with other master painters and sculptors in the city. Like Overbeke, the painter of this scene uses a bright colour palette, with a predominance of primary colours.
