HANS SCHÖPFER THE ELDER, PORTRAIT OF A BEARDED MAN WITH A RED PLATTER HAT, HALF-LENGTH, OIL ON PANEL
The picture of refinement and fashion, this unknown man is wearing a fur-lined, sleeveless brocade pourpoint over a second red brocade pourpoint. This costume, deeply influenced by Spanish fashion, suggests a date of around 1535. The same is true of the moustache and beard, with their distinctly square appearance, a style also found in portraits by Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472-1553) that date from the same decade. A relevant comparison is Cranach’s Portrait of Lukas Spielhausen from 1532, now in the Metropolitan Museum, New York (inv. no. 1981.57.1).
Hans Schöpfer the Elder (c. 1506/10-1566) belongs to the generation of artists who emerged in the wake of Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528), which also included Hans Baldung Grien (1484-1545), Hans Schäufelein (1483-1540) and Barthel Beham (1502-1540). Schöpfer's paintings have only recently been studied in depth by Kurt Löche in his monograph Hans Schöpfer der Ältere: Ein Münchner Maler des 16. Jahrhunderts, published in 1995. One of the paintings included by Löche in the artist's corpus is his Portrait of a Man Dressed as a Knight, now in the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen in Munich (inv. no. 5319). This painting, dated to circa 1533, can helpfully be compared to the present portrait. In both cases, the openness of the sitter’s posture also suggests the influence of Bartel Beham.
