Estimate value
€ 25 000 – 35 000
ÉCOLE DE REMBRANDT HARMENSZ. VAN RIJNJeune joueur de vielle à roue de profil (recto); Étude d'arbre (verso)avec inscriptions ‘Jan Lievens’ (verso)plume et encre brune, lavis brun (recto); pierre noire (verso), trace de filigrane15 x 9 cm (5 7⁄8 x 3 1⁄2 in.) Provenance Galerie Paul Prouté, Paris, Catalogue Degas, 1971, n°9 (comme attribué à Gerbrandt van den Eeckhout). Post lot text SCHOOL OF REMBRANDT HARMENSZ. VAN RIJN, A YOUNG HURDY-GURDY PLAYER IN PROFILE, PEN AND BROWN INK, BROWN WASH (RECTO); BLACK CHALK (VERSO)The subject of this drawing – a wandering musician, whose instrument, a hurdy-gurdy, can just about be recognized in his hands – was one popular with Rembrandt and his school (see K. Jones Hellerstedt, ‘A Traditional Motif in Rembrandt’s Etchings: The Hurdy-Gurdy Player’, Oud Holland, XCV (1981), pp. 16-30, afb. 4). It is depicted in greater detail in a painting at the State Hermitage Museum (inv. GE-5603), sometimes attributed to Arent de Gelder (fig. 1; see I. Sokolova in Rembrandt et son école. Collections du musée de l’Ermitage de Saint-Pétersbourg, exhib. cat., Dijon, Musée des Beaux-Arts, 2003-2004, no. 38, ill.). The relationship between the drawing and the painting is so close that the former must be a study for the latter, but the attribution of the painting, remains for now as elusive as that of the present work; a date in the early 1650s has been suggested (W. Sumowski, Gemälde der Rembrandt-Schüler, IV, Landau, 1983, no. 1943, ill., as anonymous). The painting must be inspired by a chalk study by Rembrandt (in which, however, the musician is an older man playing a rommelpot), dated around 1647, and most recently in the sale Sotheby’s, New York, 26 January 2011, lot 611 (O. Benesch, The Drawings by Rembrandt, London, 1973, III, no. 890, IV, fig. 941; P. Schatborn in Rembrandt. The complete drawings and etchings, Cologne, 2019, no. D414, ill.). The sketch of the tree on the verso of the sheet is drawn by a Dutch artist but appears to be unrelated to the style of Rembrandt and his school.
