Post lot text GODFRIED MAES, APOLLON AND LOVE, GRAPHITE, PEN AND BROWN INK, BROWN WASH, PROBABLY RETOUCHING BY JACOB DE WITTThis drawing is part of a group of over eighty illustrations of Ovid’s Metamorphoses, sold by the artist’s widow after his death, which later reappeared in the collection of the Dutch painter Jacob de Wit. De Wit found inspiration in the Fleming’s compositions for some of his illustrations of Ovid and may have retouched a number of them, including the present example (M. Plomp, ‘Goud en zilver voor Marijke. Maes en De Wit in Teylers Museum’, Liber amicorum Marijke de Kinkelder. Collegiale bijdragen over landschappen, marines en architectuur, The Hague 2013, pp. 283-290). The drawing depicts the beginning of the story of Apollo and Daphne (book I, verses 452-465), where Apollo scolds Cupid for playing with a man’s weapon (‘cum fortibus armis’), at which Venus’s son replies Apollo himself is not safe for his arrow.
