Further details

NETHERLANDISH SCHOOL, AROUND 1560-1585, A MAGPIE (PICA PICA), BLACK CHALK, WATERCOLOUR AND BODYCOLOUR, HEIGHTENED WITH ARABIC GUM

This Magpie is part of a partially dismembered album of around one hundred animal sheets acquired by the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam in 1952 (inv. RP-T-1952-345-95; M. Rikken, ‘A Spanish Album of Drawings of Animals in a South-Netherlandish Context: A Reattribution to Lambert Lombard’, The Rijksmuseum Bulletin, 62 (2014), p. 106). According to the frontispiece page (possibly a later addition), it was commissioned around 1542 by the Habsburg emperor Charles V (1500-1558) and the drawings are attributed to Lambert Lombard (1505-1566). Three other animal studies from the same group were purchased directly from Genevière Aymonier by the Rijksmuseum to complete their album in 1960 (inv. RP-T-1960-56 to 58; op. cit., p. 121, note 1).
An Oiseau de paradis, of the same provenance as the present drawing (it belonged, as indicated by the collection mark on the reverse, to Geneviève Aymonier) is in the Musée du Louvre, which received it as a gift in 1959 from Geneviève Aymonier (inv. FR 31195).
As Marrigje Rikken has shown with numerous examples, this album, which she believes was the work of Lambert Lombard, was to serve as a model and inspiration for many of the great animalist artists who worked in the Antwerp region in the second half of the 16th century, namely Joris Hoefnagel and Hans Bol (op. cit., pp.106-123).
