The subject of two women fighting over a man is a frequent one in Dutch art, where such amorous battles tinged with humour aroused the greatest curiosity. Another very similar drawing attributed to Aertgen is in the collection of the Fondation Custodia in Paris (Lucas van Leyden en de Renaissance, cat. exp., Leiden, Museum De Lakenhal, 2011, no. 129, ill.). It depicts the opposite scene: a woman being courted by two young men. The two sheets are perhaps part of the same series and could be used to prepare stained glass windows or a cycle of prints on the theme of love. The signature and date appear to be accurate in relation to the artist's career and probably date from the sixteenth century.
