VENITIAN SCHOOL, MID-18TH CENTURY, PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG LADY WITH A BLUE BOW; AND PORTRAIT OF YOUNG MAN WITH A BROWN COAT, PASTEL ON PAPER LAID DOWN ON CANVAS AND MOUNTED ON A STRETCHER

The soft and vaporous treatment of the faces and costumes, the large eyes and the position of the models in contrapposto allow to situate the author of this delicate pair of pastels in Venice in the mid-18th Century. The names of several pastellists have been mentioned: Marianna Carlevarijs (1703-1750), Rosalba Carriera (1673-1757), Francesco Pavona (1695-1777), or Gian Antonio Lazzari (1639-1713). For some examples of pastel portraits by these artists, see Neil Jeffares’ Pastels and Pastellists. The Dictionary of Pastellists before 1800 (published at www.pastellists.com). The ‘R’ stamped on the back of each canvas could refers to the Veronese artist Pietro Antonio Rotari (1707-1762), but the style of his portraits, more precise and incisive, contrasts with the softness of this pair, whose models also remain unidentified.
