Post lot text
GIOVANNI DOMENICO TIEPOLO, THE ASCENT TO CALVARY, BRUSH, BROWN INK
This rapid sketch has been dated by George Knox to the artist’s early career, when he was working closely with his father Giovanni Battista at Würzburg circa 1751-1753 (see the catalogue of the 1972 sale). Drawings executed entirely with brush and wash are rare in Giovanni Domenico’s œuvre. A stylistically similar drawing with another scene of Christ’s life, the Feast in the house of Simon, was also sold in the 1972 sale (lot 66).
