Further details
“Marquet, painter of suspended time”, the title of the monographic exhibition at the Musée d’Art Moderne in Paris in 2016 seems to echo the atmosphere of ‘Paris, Quai de Conti’. For Albert Marquet, Paris, the Seine and its bridges are the motif of infinite variations. The painter immortalizes them in powerful series, sometimes under the snow, sometimes in the mist as here. As usual, Marquet constructs the painting from simple lines of force, such as the diagonal of the street, which defines the entire canvas and imposes itself to the viewer’s eye. Matisse writes, “Marquet couldn’t afford to buy colours, especially cadmium, which was expensive. So he painted grey, and perhaps this condition of material life favoured his way”. It is not the brilliance of colour as we find it in the work of Matisse or Derain that makes Marquet a fauve painter, but this simplification of form treated by large flattened dull colours, in half-tones.
