Post Lot Text
A significant rediscovery, this collection of works by Albert Marquet has remained hidden from public view in the family collection of a close friend of the artist.
During the Second World War, when the artist departed for Algiers with his wife Marcelle, the couple asked their friend and cousin, Louis Martinet, to manage their affairs in Paris.
Summoned several times to rue de Rivoli by the German secret service – Goering was particularly appreciative of Marquet – Louis Martinet succeeded in moving the artist’s paintings and hiding them until the end of the war.
These paintings, which are valuable evidence of the long-standing bond between these two families, were given by the painter to the Martinet family at the end of war, by way of thanks.
While Le Port de l’Agha clearly illustrates the shimmering light of this region so dear to the artist, Sainte-Chapelle sous la neige exemplifies the delicate palette and pared-down aesthetic that Marquet retained throughout his life.
