ALBERTI, Leon Battista (1404-1472) - L'Architettura. Mondovi: Leonardo Torrentino, 1565.

A fine copy in armorial binding of the second edition of Bartoli's translation and the second edition of Domenichi's translation of La Pittura, as well as the first collective edition of the two works. This famous Renaissance work of architecture circulated at first as De Re Aedificatoria in 1452 and was printed in Latin in 1485 with a preface by Poliziano and dedicated to Lorenzo the Magnificent; it is remembered for having founded the modern genre of architectural treatise and Bartoli's translation into "Florentine language" makes it even more interesting as it uses many terms borrowed from the artisan world of 16th-century Florence.

Folio (332 x 215mm). Printer's device on title with an elephant and with the portrait of the author on the verso, another device at the beginning of the text on Painting in 2c3r, historiated initials and many illustrations in the text, including some full-page and 3 plates, one of which double-page, all engraved in woodcut (some light spotting, occasional traces of dust and small stains). Contemporary red morocco with cardinal arms decorated in gold, gilt spine, red speckled edges (small restorations at spine ends and corners); preserved in a modern case. Provenance: Beauvau archeueque de Marbonne (ownership inscription on title ) - armorial exlibris.
