ALEXANDRE BENOIS, THE CHINESE CROSS BRIDGE AT TSARSKOYE SELO; AND THE HERMITAGE AT TSARSKOYE SELO, PENGRAPHITECIL AND WATERCOLOUR ON PAPER, ONE HEIGHTENED WITH WHITE
The artist, theorist, art historian, critic and co-founder of the Mir Iskusstva (World of Art) group with Sergei Diaghilev (1872-1929)., had a prolific career in costume and theatre design across Europe, working among others with the Ballets russes and La Scala in Milan. In the early 1900s Benois created a series of drawings representing views of Tsarskoye Selo, the Russian imperial residence outside of Saint Petersburg. Already after his emigration to France, he returned to this nostalgic subject during the Second World War when he heard that the palace had been occupied by German forces.
The palace and park at Tsarskoye Selo were built in the first half of the 18th century under Empress Catherine the Great (1729-1796). One of the pavilions on the grounds is the Hermitage – a domed building in Baroque style, used for imperial summer receptions. It has been suggested that Benois’s depiction of the Hermitage at Tsarskoye Selo is based on a photographic reproduction in his own Tsarskoe selo v tsarstvovanie imperatritsy Elizavety Petrovny [Tsarskoye selo in the reign of Elizabeth Petrovna], Saint Petersburg, 1910, p. 162. A comparable later work by Benois was sold at Christie’s, New York, 23 October 2022, lot 634, from the collection of Ann and Gordon Getty.
At the end of the 18th century, Tsarskoye Selo was expanded with the addition of the Alexander palace and gardens, named after Catherine I’s beloved grandson and future Emperor Alexander I (1777-1825). Influenced by the 1750 publication of English architect William Halfpenny’s pattern book Rural Architecture in the Chinese Taste, a Chinese-style village and several bridges were constructed in the Alexander gardens. Located at the bend of the Krestovy Channel, the Krestovy (Cross) Chinese bridge earns its name from its unusual cross shape, as seen in the current work.
