GEORGES LEPAPE, VASLAV NIJINSKY IN LE SPECTRE DE LA ROSE, GRAPHITE AND BODYCOLOUR ON PAPER

The Spectre of the Rose is a ballet created by Serge de Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes company in 1911 in Monte Carlo, with choreography by Michel Fokine and music by Carl Maria von Weber. Vaslav Nijinsky and Tamara Karsavina were the only two dancers of the original cast. Many artists created illustrations and posters for Nijinsky’s performance, such as Léon Bakst (1866-1924) and Georges Lepape (C. Lepape and T. Defert, Georges Lepape ou l’élégence illustrée, Paris, 1983, pp. 55-65). The present drawing is preparatory to Lepape’s gouache, sold at Christie’s, London, 28 May 2012, lot 46. Nijinsky is wearing a silk rose petal costume designed by Bakst.
