(Please refer to section VAT refunds) Post lot text ALEXANDRE-FRANÇOIS DESPORTES, SATYRS AND GOATS, IN IMITATION OF A BAS-RELIEF AFTER GERARD VAN OPSTAL (1594-1668), OIL ON CANVAS, SIGNED AND DATEDThis imitation of bas-relief seems to stand out in the work of Alexandre-François Desportes (1661-1743), a painter traditionally associated with still lifes and hunting scenes. However, this is not his first attempt: the painter had already distinguished himself in this genre at the Salons of 1725 and 1737 (G. de Lastic, P. Jacky, Desportes. Catalogue raisonné, p. 228, no. P 681 and P 774) whilst several of his still lifes integrate such bas-reliefs, like Nature morte au pot à oille, bas-relief, aiguière et violon (Mulhouse, Musée des beaux-arts, inv. D.73.1.19) and Nature morte au gibier, fruits et instruments de musique (Gien, musée international de la chasse, inv. D 53 23 29; S 2).Here, our painter is copying a bas-relief by Gerard van Opstal (1594-1668), a Flemish sculptor influenced by Duquesnoy (1597-1643), whose mythological subjects, already very popular among his contemporaries, were admired well into the 17th century. Part of the royal collections, the bas-relief shown here shows a satyr, accompanied by three children and two young satyrs, playing with a goat. It was the same relief that Chardin (1699-1779) presented nearly thirty years later at the Salon of 1769 (P. Rosenberg, Chardin, [exh. cat.], Paris, Grand Palais, 1979, p. 357, n°132).It is possible that our work is the one exhibited at the 1740 Salon (G. de Lastic, P. Jacky, Desportes, Catalogue raisonné, p. 228, n°P 819). The absence of precise dimensions in the Salon booklet, as well as its summary description, do not allow us to confirm this today.
