Further details

ALPHONSE PELLION, TWO DRAWINGS: COUPANG, TIMOR ISLAND; AND VIEW OF BATHURST DATED 4 DECEMBER 1819, GRAPHITE, WATERCOLOUR, SIGNED AND TITLED

In September 1817, Louis-Claude de Saulces de Freycinet and his crew of engineers, scientists and draughtsmen set sail from the harbour of Toulon and travelled the world on their ship. Alphonse Pellion took part in the expedition as a draughtsman and produced a series of drawings of the landscapes and peoples they encountered. This lot of watercolours shows a shipyard at Coupang on the island of Timor (undated) and fields in the colony of Bathurst in Australia (dated 4 December 1819).This composition of the shipyard at Coupang (now Kupang in Indonesia) was engraved in Louis de Freycinet's Voyage autour du monde fait par ordre du Roi sur les corvettes de S. M. ‘l'Uranie’ et ‘la physicienne’, pendant les années 1817, 1818, 1819 et 1820 published in Paris between 1824 and 1844 (pl. 23). This drawing is probably a preparatory sketch for the publication. A drawing done solely in brown washes and with a slightly different composition was sold at Christie's, London, 26 September 2002, lot 52.

The second drawing of this lot presents one of the earliest known illustrations of this colony, founded a few years earlier and the oldest inland settlement in Australia. The caption to the drawing, written by Pellion, refers to the Macquarie River, named after Lachlan Macquarie (1762-1824), Governor of New South Wales from 1808 to 1822 (‘Lachlan Macquarie’ in Australian Dictionary of Biography, Vol. 2, Melbourne, 1967, revised and digitised 2006, accessed January 2025), and the farms of William Cox (1764-1837), superintendent of the colony and known for overseeing the construction of the ‘Cox Road’ through the Blue Mountains from 1814 (‘William Cox’ in Australian Dictionary of Biography, Vol.1, Melbourne, 1966, revised and digitised 2006, accessed January 2025).
