Amaro do Valle worked at the Monastery of El Escorial with both Federico Zuccari and Pellegrino Tibaldi around 1590, and became painter at the court of Philip III, King of Spain and Portugal, in 1612. Most of his work has disappeared over the years, despite a substantial production of paintings for the churches of Lisbon. The present drawing may be a preparation for a lost altarpiece. Of the few surviving drawings by the artist, three are in the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga, Lisbon (see Drawings. The MNAA Collection, exhib. cat., Lisbon, Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga, 1994, nos. 13-15, ill.).
