ASTOLFO PETRAZZI, THE DESCENT OF CHRIST INTO LIMBO, BLACK CHALK, PEN AND BROWN INK, BROWN WASH
Petrazzi was a successful Sienese artist, contemporary of Francesco Vanni and Ventura Salimbeni. The rediscovery of Petrazzi’s graphic production is due to Philip Pouncey, who in 1971 published a group of his drawings ( ‘Trois nouveaux dessins de Rutilio Manetti et une hypothèse sur Astolfo Petrazzi’, Revue de l’art, XIV, 1971, pp. 67-71). As is the case for most of Petrazzi’s drawings, the present composition cannot be related to a known painting.
