ANTONIO MOLINARI, CHRIST NAILED TO THE CROSS, RED CHALK, PEN AND BROWN INK, BROWN WASH
The present sheet was sold in 1989 with a tentative attribution to the Czech artist, Karel Škréta (1610-1674), who travelled to Venice and Rome (see Provenance). Catherine Monbeig Goguel recognized in the drawing the hand of the Venetian baroque painter Antonio Molinari (Turner, op. cit., p. 152). Substantial groups of drawings by Molinari are in the Kunstmuseum, Düsseldorf (R. Green, ‘Molinari drawings in Dusseldorf’, Master Drawings, XXII, no. 2 (1984), pp. 194-205), and in the Louvre (C. Monbeig Goguel, ‘Drawings by Antonio Molinari in the Louvre’, Master Drawings, XXII-XXIV, no. 2, Summer 1985-1986, pp. 232-241).
